Three quarter length Portrait of a Gentleman.

Oil on Canvas. 1270 x 980 mm. Relined.

Dutch, 1650’s, apparently unsigned.

Tentatively attributed to Samual van Hoogstraten.

Framed in a later wide 19th century gilt frame.  1510 x 1240 mm.

The sitter stands in an architectural Baroque setting, in front of a fluted column with floral acanthus leaf socle, a large piece of velvet(?) veils the right hand portion of the picture. One hand rests on a plinth draped in his mantle, the other is held open. He is dressed in a silk jacket and large cloak with fine linen cuffs and collar.

Tentatively attributed to Samual van Hoogstraten, 1627 – 1678.

Van Hoogstraten worked England from the 1650s onwards but increased his output between 1662 -1667, painting and lecturing for clients including Thomas Knatchbull Esq., and his brother Sir Norton Knatchbull, 1st Baronet (1602-1685)

It has a four digit black stencil similar to Christies catalogue marks (currently untraced)
